I'm about to say something I wasn't sure I'd ever say about a science fiction novel about interstellar war - this book is warmly humanist in its approach. The Human Division is something different, it is a collection of 13 short stories that take place in the "Old Man's War" universe. This book sucked me right in from start to finish. Inciteful comment regarding the nature of warfare from John Scalzi's Sci-Fi Novel Old Man's War. Before I even begin to rant about Old Man's War, the debut Sci-Fi novel by John Scalzi, I just want to say that I enjoyed reading this novel immensely. I think that Old Man's War consists of some very good stories with great characters but in terms of world-building they don't make a whole lot of sense. John Scalzi and Tor are making his groundbreaking novel Old Man's War available as a free download as part of the runup to the launch of Tor's killer new sf supersite. This review is of the first 10 books in the series as the last 3 are not yet available. In Old Man's War, we learn that Earth has a surplus of senior citizens and a shortage of soldiers to fight all the hostile alien races trying to chase us out of space and back to our own ball of mud. Post includes an illustration of the novel by Craig Maher. In typical Heinlein fashion, military recruits derive benefits unavailable to everyday citizens.
